Chart the Records That Are Unique to Your Business

Your dashboard can now report on Custom Objects, not just contacts and opportunities. If you track something your business depends on that is not a standard CRM record, you can build a widget that counts it, sums it or averages it, and put that number beside the rest of your reporting.

What is a Custom Object, in plain terms?

A Custom Object is a record type you define yourself, for things the standard CRM does not cover. A veterinary clinic tracks Pets, a property manager tracks Units, a garage tracks Vehicles. You give the object a name and add custom fields to it, and it behaves like any other record in your account.

How do I create one?

You create the object first, then report on it. Setting one up takes a couple of minutes.

1. Go to Settings, then Objects.
2. Click "Add Custom Object".
3. Enter the singular name, for example Pet, and the plural name, for example Pets.
4. Name the primary display field, for example Pet Name or Pet Identification Number. The internal name is created for you, and you can edit it using the code icon.
5. Add an icon so the object is easy to spot, and a description so anyone on your team understands what it is for.
6. Click "Create Custom Object".

How do I put it on my dashboard?

Custom Objects appear as their own section in the widget picker once the object exists. From there a widget behaves like any other, with filters, chart types and themes.

1. Open your dashboard.
2. Click Edit, then Add Widget.
3. Scroll to Custom Objects and choose the widget you need.

4. Set your filters, switch the chart type and apply a theme.
5. Click Save to update your dashboard.

What can the widgets measure?

Three metrics: count, sum and average. Count tells you how many records match your filters, sum totals a numeric field across them, and average divides that total by the number of records. Between them you can answer most questions about volume and value.
